This colonial system was marked by profound inequalities:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2022 The peninsular Spaniards (born in Europe) held the highest positions in the administration, army, and Church.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2022 The Creoles (children of Spaniards born in America) were wealthy but lacked real political power.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2022 Mestizos, indigenous people, and Afro-descendants suffered exploitation, forced labor, and oppressive taxes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This model led to growing discontent, which manifested in local rebellions throughout the 18th century, such as the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/topic\/history-of-Colombia\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Communeros&#8217; Revolution<\/a> in 1781, brutally suppressed by the authorities. However, the real change began in the early 19th century, when the world was shaken by revolutionary ideas: the French Revolution, the independence of the United States, and Enlightenment ideals inspired American elites.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Furthermore, Spain was facing its worst crisis: in 1808, Napoleon invaded the Peninsula, deposed King Ferdinand VII, and placed his brother Jos\u00e9 Bonaparte on the throne. The Creoles had planned the incident to provoke a confrontation and mobilize the people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Today, the famous Vase of Llorente is displayed in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.museoindependencia.gov.co\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Museum of Independence in Bogot\u00e1<\/a>, as a reminder of how a simple object can change history.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"a-long-and-painful-struggle-1810-1819\"><strong>A Long and Painful Struggle: 1810 \u2013 1819<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The uprising of July 20th did not bring immediate independence. On the contrary, it triggered nearly ten years of wars, fragile alliances, and internal conflicts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Why was independence so complicated?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Social and racial inequality that divided society.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Lack of unity among provinces, which had different interests.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Spanish reprisals, who managed to regain control several times.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Scarcity of resources, as military campaigns required money and manpower.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">During these years, heroes and heroines emerged, becoming legends:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Sim\u00f3n Bol\u00edvar, military leader and political visionary, known as The Liberator.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Francisco de Paula Santander, the organizer and strategist crucial to the victory.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Policarpa Salavarrieta, \u00abLa Pola,\u00bb a patriot spy who gave her life for the cause.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The decisive moment came on August 7th, 1819, with the <a href=\"https:\/\/colombia.co\/en\/colombia-country\/history\/the-battle-of-boyaca-the-decisive-feat-for-colombian-independence\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Battle of Boyac\u00e1<\/a>. The liberating army, after an epic feat crossing the Andes, defeated the royalist troops and secured the path to independence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"after-the-victory-the-dream-of-gran-colombia\"><strong>After the Victory: The Dream of Gran Colombia<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In 1821, after securing freedom, New Granada joined with Venezuela, Ecuador, and Panama to form Gran Colombia, an ambitious project led by Bol\u00edvar aimed at Latin American unity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, the reality was far from the dream:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2022 Internal conflicts, economic differences, and personal ambitions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2022 Provinces that wanted autonomy from a strong central government.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This led to the dissolution of Gran Colombia in 1830.
